A close relative to the rambutan and lychee family (Sapindaceae), Australian longans were brought into Far North Queensland by Chinese immigrants in the 1960s. The more common longan cultivar in Australia is the Kohala, Biew Kiew, Chompoo and Haew.
The Thorny Fruit Co's favourite longan variety is the Biew Kiew from one particular farm in Mareeba QLD.
Australian longan season is usually between February and mid-June.
